That is worth saying up front, because the material comparison gets more attention than it deserves and the installation gets less. Still, they behave differently, and the differences matter more in New England than they would in a milder climate. Freeze and thaw cycles, driving wind off the water, heavy snow loads sliding off a roof onto an elevation, and salt air along the coast all interact with these two materials in different ways. Vinyl is the less expensive option, both in material and in labor, and that gap is real rather than marginal. Fiber cement costs more to buy, weighs considerably more, and takes longer to cut, handle and fasten, which shows up in the labor line. On a typical Massachusetts colonial the difference is meaningful enough that it changes what else fits in the budget. What complicates the comparison is the long run. Fiber cement generally needs repainting on a cycle, which is a real future cost that does not appear on the original estimate. Vinyl does not get painted, but it also cannot be refreshed when the color fades, so its endpoint is replacement. Neither is simply cheaper. They are expensive at different times.
Fiber cement is the tougher material. Vinyl handles salt fine as a material and fades faster under unobstructed coastal sun. For a house directly exposed to wind off the water, fiber cement with the right fasteners is the more durable answer. For a sheltered street a mile inland, that advantage narrows considerably.
Vinyl looks best when it is new and gradually fades, particularly on southern and western elevations, and darker colors show it sooner. It cannot be repainted meaningfully, so the appearance timeline runs one direction. Fiber cement holds color longer and takes paint well, which means a house can be a different color in fifteen years without a full re-side. On older Massachusetts homes with real architectural detail, fiber cement also produces a crisper trim and profile that reads closer to wood, which matters in neighborhoods where the surrounding houses are original. On a mid century ranch or a straightforward colonial, well installed vinyl looks genuinely fine and the visual argument mostly disappears.
